What IELTS band do you actually need?

Plenty of students spend a year pushing 6.5 to 7.0 when the programme they wanted only ever asked for 6.5. How to find the number that applies to you.

A language requirement is not one number. It varies by country, university, level and sometimes by subject.

Three different numbers

Most programmes set three conditions: an overall band, a minimum in each individual skill, and occasionally a subject-specific rule — nursing and law commonly require a higher Writing band.

Conditional offers

If you do not have a score yet, many universities issue a conditional offer: your place is held and you have until a stated date to supply the certificate. You can start the process now.

Pre-sessional English

The other route is a pre-sessional course — six to twelve weeks before term starts, taken instead of re-sitting the exam. It costs money, but far less than losing a year.

Finding your own number

In the programme search, enter the score you hold today. The results show only programmes you actually qualify for, rather than the ones you wish you did.

Rules and figures change. This article states the position at the time of writing — always confirm against the official source before you apply.
